Reality is here
If we needed any more confirmation that our political ‘leaders’ and society as a whole needs to wake up to ‘the Reality of Everything’, then this week has delivered. From the supposed leader of the Free World’s resource-grabbing frenzy for oil and mineral reserves in Venezuela and ‘Iceland’, to holidaying families tragically buried under landslides or people swept away in raging torrents of rivers. Then we had the report warning of the dire consequences of global ecosystem collapse on economies and international security, which is so stark, the UK government wanted to bury it.
The consequences of increasingly contested resources, geopolitical turmoil, biodiversity collapse and climate-induced disruption and tragedy that those with foresight have warned of is here, now.
This is The Reality of Everything.
But still there is no action. As Mountain Tūī reported, our Prime Minister was initially too busy electioneering to be bothered with the weather-induced human tragedy unfolding on his own doorstep right now - let alone thinking about what is to come.
So civil society needs to step up and demand political leadership that will confront the interconnected crises that are unravelling before us.

Will I be able to attend online?
A question many people have been asking is whether online attendance will be an option. The answer is, it depends. We would love to offer an online option, but this does necessitate getting our systems right and having really robust IT support, and facilitation for online participation, which - you guessed it - will need funding and resourcing. So if we get the necessary funding to do this, we will! If so, attendance will likely be by koha, and we will provide an online attendance option on Humanitix. Look out for updates on this.
However, even if an online option does not eventuate (though we hope it will!), we are aiming to produce high-quality video recordings of the expert talks, similar to those produced by the National Emergency Briefing. This will enable people to access and share these important presentations following the event.
Thank you for your generous support
Finally, on behalf of the organising committee, I also wanted to take the opportunity to offer my heartfelt thanks to those people who have made donations to support the event. This event is being organised by a small team of volunteers in their spare time, with no sponsorship or funding. Contributions, big or small, are welcomed, and will enable us to cover an audio-visual specialist to make high-quality recordings of the event, support non-salaried experts to attend the event, and other up-front costs. We would also like to offer free places for students where possible. Donations can be made via our supporting partner:
The Lentil Intervention Incorporated (a New Zealand Registered Charity CC59096)
